Following the success of
Tunisia's National Solidarity Fund which has helped to reduce poverty to around
4% the
UN's General Assembly has passed a
resolution to establish an equivalent
World Solidarity Fund.
Mark Malloch-Brown, the Administrator of the
UN Development Programme (UNDP), welcomed the passing of this resolution and said “We certainly
hope that the Fund will be well endowed, and look forward, in UNDP, to making full use of this instrument of world solidarity as we move to implement the
Millennium Development Goals, especially the overarching
goal on halving poverty by 2015.”
