The
Bat Conservation Trust have said it is "immensely exciting" that a male
Greater Mouse-Eared bat has been
found hibernating in Sussex. This is because the species was
declared extinct in the UK in 1990 and has not been seen since.
It is possible that the individual found by the
Sussex Bat Group has flown over from Europe or may even be a member of a larger colony which also hibernates somewhere in the UK...
It may interest you that before 1991 the last mammal to go extinct in the UK had been the
wolf which disappeared 250 years ago!
