Although the EU is the most expensive producer of sugar in the world it is also the biggest exporter of this commodity (accounting for 40% of world white sugar exports) + sells sugar at prices 50% to 65% less than those guaranteed within the EU... Subsidies and tariffs generate vast profits for big sugar processors and large farmers - and vast surpluses that are dumped on world markets...
